Nutrient Deficiencies

Proper nutrition is essential for a child’s growth, brain development, immune function, and overall health. Vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids play critical roles in everything from energy production and mood regulation to digestion and detoxification. When the body lacks key nutrients, even subtly, children may begin to show symptoms that affect multiple systems.

Nutrient deficiencies can develop for many reasons, including poor absorption, selective eating, chronic inflammation, gut imbalances, increased metabolic demands, or underlying health conditions. In children, deficiencies are not always obvious and may present as behavioral, immune, or developmental concerns rather than classic signs of malnutrition.

Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Children

  • Iron – important for oxygen delivery, energy, and cognitive development
  • Vitamin D – supports immune regulation, bone health, and mood
  • Vitamin B12 – essential for neurological function, focus, and energy
  • Magnesium – involved in nervous system regulation, sleep, and muscle function
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – critical for brain development, inflammation balance, and behavior
  • Zinc – supports immune health, skin integrity, and wound healing

Symptoms may include

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Poor focus, learning challenges, or academic struggles
  • Frequent infections or slow recovery from illness
  • Digestive concerns such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Dry skin, brittle nails, or hair changes
  • Mood changes including irritability, anxiety, or low mood
  • Growth delays or difficulty thriving

Our Root-Cause Approach

At Heal Pediatrics, we take a root-cause, individualized approach to identifying and addressing nutrient deficiencies. Rather than supplementing blindly, we focus on understanding why a deficiency exists—whether related to diet, absorption, gut health, inflammation, or increased nutritional needs.

Evaluation may include a comprehensive health history, dietary assessment, and targeted laboratory testing when clinically appropriate to assess nutrient status, digestion, and metabolic function.

Treatment & Support

Treatment plans are personalized and may include:

  • Nutrition and dietary guidance tailored to the child
  • Targeted supplementation based on individual needs
  • Support for gut health and nutrient absorption
  • Addressing underlying contributors such as inflammation or chronic stress
  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustment over time

Our goal is not just to correct lab values, but to to discover why they occurred. We work to support optimal growth, resilience, and long-term health by ensuring the body has the foundational nutrients it needs to function well.
